pint_price.jpgDrinking is a major part of Irish culture. In Ireland every street has a pub, where the men gather in the evening for warmth and company. The poverty brought on by excessive drinking and the suffering caused by it cannot be stopped. During this time the whole family was dependent on the wages of the men in the family. If the money is not available the whole family will spiral into poverty that cannot be climbed out of. In Catholic Ireland divorce cannot occur. With four children, and at some points more, it is impossible for Angela to get a job on her own. The family does manage to maintain hope despite the numerous times Malachy came home drunk, having spent is wage at the bar. Malachy believes that the dole was meant to support his family and that the wage he earned for a hard day’s work was for him to spend.
